Where to test in England
Testing for HIV is free, simple and confidential. You can test in person or by ordering a kit online.
Testing in person
You can get a free HIV test by visiting a sexual health clinic. This is also an opportunity to get tested for other sexually transmitted infections. Many organisations also offer testing in the community.
- Find a sexual health clinic near you (NHS England).
- Find a free local HIV test provider (NAM Aidsmap).
Testing at home
In most local areas you can order a free postal test. You take a small sample of blood at home and post it back to a lab for testing, with results in a few days. Often the services will also offer tests for other sexually transmitted infections at the same time.
If you would prefer to do a test yourself and read the results within a few minutes, you could buy a self test. These are free from Terrence Higgins Trust to eligible people in some parts of the country.
